Are Silver Braces Still a Good Treatment Option?

You might be considering braces for yourself or your child to correct crooked teeth or another orthodontic issue. But with so many different types of braces on the market, you might wonder whether traditional silver braces are still a good treatment option. Since they’ve been around since ancient times (literally), there must be a better option today, right? Keep reading to learn more about silver braces and whether orthodontists still consider them an amazing treatment choice for many patients.

What are silver braces?

Silver braces, or traditional braces, are what you probably picture when you think of braces. Metal brackets are adhered to each tooth, and rubber bands are then placed around the brackets to keep the archwire in place. While you may think there is only one type of metal available for the brackets, there are actually a variety of options, depending on your preference and needs.

Rhodium braces are a popular alternative to traditional silver braces. While they are still silver in color, they are a little bit lighter than traditional metal braces and have smaller brackets. They also have a matte finish that diffuses light. These factors make them more comfortable and less noticeable than normal silver braces. Rhodium braces are also hypoallergenic as they contain no nickel, so if you are not able to wear traditional silver braces due to an allergy, rhodium braces would be the perfect alternative for you.

Are silver braces still a good type of treatment?

Despite being around for centuries, silver braces are still one of the best treatment options. Silver braces fix overbites, underbites, crossbites, misaligned teeth and jaws, and overcrowding better than any other product available today. So whatever type of improvement your smile or your child’s smile might need, silver braces can help. They are also the most durable, since they are made out of metal. They hold up the best under pressure and need less frequent repairs than non-metal braces. If the worst should happen and you do need to repair them, your orthodontist will be able to easily fix any issues.

Additionally, silver braces are comfortable. While this might seem unlikely since they are made of metal, your orthodontist is able to fit them to your teeth and make sure they cause minimum discomfort. Once you adjust to them, which normally just takes a few days, you won’t even feel them in your mouth.

Silver braces are also affordable, actually the most affordable braces option on the market. They are also easy to maintain—if you brush and floss your teeth regularly, your braces will remain clean and in good repair. Patients who get metal braces never have to worry about losing or remembering to wear their braces because they are attached to their teeth, unlike Invisalign aligners.

Our Orlando orthodontist offers both traditional silver braces and rhodium braces. Traditional braces are less expensive, but whichever option you pick, we will figure out a payment plan that works for you.
